How an Attorney Eases The FSBO Experience

By Andrew Steinfeld

"For Sale By Owner" transactions can be an effective method of minimizing brokerage fees on the sale of residential real property. But selling your home yourself leaves you responsible for the preparation of real estate contract and disclosure documents, and for the oversight of title and escrow procedures. Mistakes or omissions in these areas can expose an unrepresented seller to liability. And the costs of litigation can easily surpass the savings on brokerage fees gained by selling the property on your own.

Having an experienced real estate attorney helps tremendously in this regard. An attorney can draft and review documents, coordinate with title companies and escrow agents, and generally provide the peace of mind that comes from knowing your transaction is being handled competently, while still allowing you to save money by marketing your property yourself.
