How to Hire a Real Estate Lawyer

If you are a first-time home buyer, or you are looking to buy or sell a home, a real estate lawyer will help answer your questions, help you negotiate prices, and will help you take care of the little details that you might have overlooked.

What should you do?

  1. Ask around - talk to friends and family to see if you can get any personal referrals. It's always best to use a company that someone you know has used, and can therefore offer you insight, recommendations, warnings, etc. based on their personal experience.

  2. Professional referrals - talk to local real estate brokers or a local realtors association for potential referrals. Professionals within the real estate world will most likely have a few names in mind.

  3. Ask questions - make sure to prepare a list of questions that you will ask a real estate lawyer before you commit, to make sure that they are an appropriate selection for your specific situation. Most lawyers will be willing to answer simple questions over the phone at no cost.

  4. Make a list - identify a list of possible lawyers with whom you would consider working and give each one a call.

  5. Payment inquiry - ask each lawyer how much they charge per hour. Also, see if they can give you an estimate of how much time will be required to complete all the necessary tasks, such as reviewing contracts, handling disclosures and closing the deal.

  6. Choose an attorney, and get to work!
