What You Need to Know about the Waste/Garbage Collection Services: An Interview with Kim Scheibly of Marin Sanitary Service

By Kim Scheibly

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Marin Sanitary Service is a family-owned and family-operated resource-hauling business that has been serving central Marin since 1948. We provide comprehensive recycling and hauling services that include weekly curbside collection of residential, commercial, and multi-family organics, recycling, and garbage.

What constitutes the "waste" that you collect from homeowners in Bay Area?

Waste is any material (or resource) that is sent to the landfill without being given the chance to be recycled or reused. Discarded materials are collected in source separated containers: a green cart for yard waste and food scraps, a split cart for recycling (papers on one side/glass, plastic, and metal bottles, cans & containers on the other), and a gray cart for the garbage.

Can you briefly talk about the main steps in the waste collection process that people should know about?

Always make sure that your carts are set out the night before your collection day with handles facing towards your house and have each cart spaced 2 feet away from other carts, cars, or mailboxes. Anything placed in the garbage will go to the landfill and will not be processed.

To prevent resources from going to the landfill, customers should familiarize themselves with what is recyclable and compostable and use the dual sort recycling cart for recyclable materials and the organics cart for all yard waste and food scraps.

How does the pricing work? Do you have a pricing criteria for the waste that you collect?

The bill is determined by the size of the garbage cart. For residential customers, this cost includes a recycling cart and an organics cart. If customers recycle and compost everything thing they can, they should be able to reduce the size of the garbage and save money.

Is there anything that you don't or can't remove?

Nothing is sorted out of the garbage containers. Marin Sanitary Service processes all curbside recyclable materials from the recycling and organics carts. Large items and things not allowed in the curbside collection carts can be dropped at Marin Resource Recovery Center, Marin Recycling Center, and the Marin Household Hazardous Waste Facility for processing and recycling.

What is one of the best questions you've been asked about waste collection?

Q:What happens if I put recyclables in my gray garbage cart?

A:They go straight to the landfill. MSS does not sort your garbage, which is why it is important to always source separate your recyclables and compostables at home.
