Studio Seven Arts Inspires and Impresses With Variety

By Pamela Sosnowski

Many art galleries tend to focus on one medium such as painting, sculpture, or glass. Studio Seven Arts of Pleasanton, however, not only showcases all three but handcrafted jewelry as well and even offers custom framing services. This appeal to a wider variety of customers and art lovers no doubt has contributed to the gallery being voted Best of the East Bay by readers of Diablo magazine for five consecutive years from 2011 to 2015.

Owner Dirk Christiansen opened the spacious Main Street gallery after becoming inspired by artwork he encountered in a small town near Madison, Wisconsin several years ago.

"Though this town is tiny, it is home to over 20 art galleries," he said. "I found myself captivated by an exhibition at one of [them]. Modern pieces, full of swirls of vibrant colors that spoke to me, making me feel alive, vital, and full of energy. The artist, James Leonard, happened to be there and we started chatting. Art was his therapy and it kept him grounded and full of juice?just as I felt when viewing his art. I thought to myself how wonderful it would be to share this feeling with others and went home to start my gallery."

Open daily from 10 AM to 7 PM, Seven Studio Arts is currently displaying paintings by artists Marianne Bland, Tyler Abshier, Susan Hoehn and others that incorporate these same vibrant colors throughout their renderings of the California landscape and street scenes. In addition to paintings, the gallery's intricate, handcrafted jewelry features a variety of styles made of unique metals, gems, and other natural materials. The glass works and sculptures are one-of-a-kind decorative pieces made by American artists. According to Christiansen, the studio prides itself on representing local and emerging artists as well as those that are nationally recognized.

"We select the featured artists based on trends we see from our clients, the marketplace and quite frankly because we just enjoy the art," he said. "Our gallery features a full range of art from landscapes, modern, photography, original works of art and giclées."

If you already own artwork that you'd like to display, the gallery offers custom framing services, which is a craft all its own. The Seven Studio Arts staff offers over 2,500 frame styles and 40 years of combined experience to help any piece of art shine.

They treat each customer individually and take into consideration the area of the home the work will be displayed including the style and size of the room and the surrounding decor. Each design uses museum-quality materials and ultraviolet protective glass to deflect sun damage. Every framing job is backed by a one-year guarantee, and the gallery can also provide on-site consultation for residential and commercial art needs.

The gallery enjoys a close relationship with the local community by being a regular participant in downtown Pleasanton's annual events including the Summer Wine Stroll, Halloween Brew Crawl, Holiday Spirit Stroll, and more. No matter what medium a visitor may be interested in, Christiansen invites the public to stop by and derive inspiration from the array of displays.

"Art is meant to inspire and to evoke feeling," he said. "It's like music- upon viewing a piece, you may find yourself feeling something deep down inside that you can't quite put your finger on."
