Stationery Store Corrick's Unites Family and Community Through Independent Art

By Kelly Church

With a dedication to customer service, Corrick's is a Santa Rosa, CA stationery and gift shop. The store has been around since 1915 and has a rich history, remaining a family business all these years. Corrick's specializes in stationery and invitations, but is also a place for the community to enjoy locally made artwork.

According to Assistant Manager Matthew Sundahl, Corrick's carries an assortment of fine stationery on luxury papers, including his personal favorites from Crane & Co. The store also sells pens that combine excellent writing with contemporary design. His favorite is a retractable Pilot fountain pen that he called "gorgeous."

"Much more than just being a business that's run by a family though, the Corrick/Brown family has used their business to create an epicenter of love and a sense of family in downtown Santa Rosa," Sundahl said. "There is a tremendous family mentality that begins with [owners] Keven and Jeri [Brown] that cares for everyone who works and shops at Corrick's, and reaches out to the other downtown businesses and through the city."

In 2011, Corrick's partnered with the Sonoma County Art Trails program to create The Art Trails Gallery at Corrick's. The gallery became the sole year-round gallery dedicated to Art Trails artists. Sundahl believes this opportunity to represent "magnificent work" from the community is a "joy."

"This was a wonderful chance for the Art Trails program and its artist to gain exposure," Sundahl said. "We at Corrick's feel we got the best end of the deal by gaining an incredible selection of locally-produced art pieces, including many items which fit our existing departments, such as pottery and fine jewelry."

On First Friday every month, the community has the opportunity to meet artists from around the area. In 2014, Corrick's asked Canine Companions for Independence to come pour wine during First Friday and share the organization's work and purpose. After that, it became a tradition and Corrick's continues to invite nonprofit organizations to pour wine during First Friday events, with all the proceeds going towards the organization.
