So You Want to Build an Addition?: An Interview with Simon Malouf of Sonoma Remodel

By Simon Malouf

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We specialize in residential remodeling projects. This includes additions, kitchens, bathrooms and general alterations. We take the project from the design phase all the way to the completion phase.

What are some of the most common types of additions that people want in the Sonoma, Calif., area?

That would be a granny unit. Either for full-time use or just for guests.

What are some of the biggest benefits of building an addition to a home?

Being able to bring in a parent to live with you or have an extra room for guests.

Can you list the basic steps involved with designing and building a second-story addition?

Basically, your foundation has to be designed to take a second story. Might have to go through the planning commission as well.

What are some of the challenges that a homeowner might face during this process?

Getting your plan past the planning commission, and then the largest issue is are you going to be able to live in the house while the remodel is happening.

What should homeowners take into consideration before deciding they want to build an addition?

Do a cost-benefit analysis. Is it worth it? In the case of bringing in a parent to live with you there are many positive attributes.

Do you have any tips to help people make the process as easy and stress-free as possible?

You want to hire a contractor that is going to be easy to work with. It feels like some homeowners have a win-lose approach to this process. They forget that they themselves are being interviewed initially. If I get a sense that a potential client might be difficult to work with, I will pass on a project.
