Painting Tips From the Professionals: An Interview with Evan Ellithorpe of The Young Professionals Inc.

By Evan Ellithorpe

Tell us a bit about your company and its foundation.

I started The Young Professionals in 1984 with a goal to create a positive impact on my community by providing top quality services that build long lasting relationships with customers and suppliers. My goal is to lend credibility to the professional painting and decorating industry. We value and practice integrity by dealing honestly with all our customers and suppliers. We stand behind our work and follow through on all our commitments to ensure customer satisfaction. We adhere to current standards by following the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America (PDCA) professional guidelines.

I am past president of our local chapter and I am currently serving on the Executive Board of Directors for our state Chapter. I am proud of our proactive approach to environmental health and safety. We are committed to managing all phases of our business in a manner which minimizes the effects of products and operations on the environment.

What painting services do you provide?

About half of our business is new construction and remodel and half is repaint. We are very experienced in dealing with general contractors, designers, and homeowners. We provide residential and commercial, Interior and exterior service. We do painting, staining, refinishing, front door and cabinet restoration, Dry wall repair and texturing, acoustic ceiling removal, molding installation, and wall covering removal and installation. Right now The Young Professionals has 8 employees So we are able to handle large projects.

Do you recommend taping a room before painting?

It is very important to protect the area you are working in. We always cover all surfaces that we don't want to get paint on. We remove wall plates, light fixtures, door, cabinet and window hardware. We cover floors and furniture, mask glass on windows and many times we will mask between color changes to assure straight lines. Many times we will also put up plastic walls to separate work areas from non-work areas. If we have to walk through areas we are not working in we will put floor protection down so we keep those areas clean also.

What is your technique for cutting in? Do you roll paint onto walls in a particular way that coats them best?

We apply paint by spray, roller and brush depending on the surface and desired results. We try to spray doors trim and cabinets to achieve the smoothest surfaces. Most of the time we roll and brush ceilings and walls.

Do you have any other tips of the trade?

It is very important to always remember we are working in someone's home. It is personal to them. We must treat it with respect and care. It is important to clean up daily so no dirt is carried around, or children can get into work area. Don't play loud music or be scary, and always treat your customer with respect. Our goal is to leave them with a positive experience and create a customer for life.
