P-za Pie Serves Up So Much More Than Pizza to the Bay Area

By Pamela Sosnowski

True to its tagline, P-za Pie of Concord is "so much more than pizza." The restaurant, which opened in 2013, serves a variety of freshly made crepes (in both savory and dessert flavors) calzones, salads, and desserts in addition to traditional Italian style pizza.

"We created a unique menu with one-of-a-kind pizzas such as our Popeye PZA or carbonara PZA that you can get nowhere else," explains owner and executive chef Habib El Jacifi. "Everything is made to order other than our ready-made slices, so you can put your own spin on things. We offer sweet, savory and breakfast crepes served all day long. We have hot oven baked sandwiches with all the meats made in-house. We make smoothies to order with real fruit and juice. We deliver everything on our menu to your door including banana splits and ice cream shakes and homemade banana cream pies."

Jacifi has been cooking since he was a child growing up in Casablanca, Morocco. His mother introduced him to French, Spanish, Mediterranean, Moroccan cooking and serves as the inspiration for many of his dishes. When Jacifi visited San Francisco in 1999 at his mother's urging, he fell in love with not only the city, but the variety of restaurants. After interning at several restaurants, he opened the Italian restaurant Fiore in 2008 which quickly gained a reputation among the community as "the best kept secret in Concord."

The success of Fiora inspired him to launch a pizza restaurant to offer a more casual dining experience and delivery service to the Concord area. "We wanted to create an affordable family friendly place with great food inspired from around the world," he explains. "We picked a place close to our heart in our own neighborhood and created new jobs."

P-za Pie offers a family-friendly atmosphere with flat-screen TVs and a large patio where customers are welcome to bring their dogs while enjoying a slice and an ice-cold beer. Some of the specialty pizzas include the chicken Caesar salad p-za, the chicken bacon ranch p-za, and the savory mushrooms and truffles p-za which is topped with shitake, porcine, and button mushrooms, a four-cheese blend, blue cheese, and truffle oil.

The menu also offers all of the p-zas as gluten-free, calzones, oven baked sandwiches, and of course, a selection of crepes with fillings such as peanut butter and Nutella, banana cream and graham cracker crumbs, and any number of meat, cheeses, and veggies.

With its unique menu offerings, quality comfort food, and fast, friendly service, P-za Pie has won over many locals since its opening a few years ago and has inherited the magic touch Jacifi gave his first restaurant.
