No Need to be Fancy for Black Bean BBQ Catering

Nothing makes Jim Bergin happier than making other people happy. He's been able to accomplish that quite a bit through his catering company, Black Bean BBQ Catering, based in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Bergin had been co-owner of a restaurant, Clo's Parkside Grill & BBQ, for nine years. His partner left the venture after the first eight, during which time the duo struggled to ever make any money. Which isn't to say Clo's was a total failure, because once Bergin moved on, he took an important piece of the restaurant with him: the catering side.

Black Bean BBQ caters to all sorts of events, and while Bergin acknowledges being fancy may not be his companies strong suit, the food will speak for itself.

"If they want really exceptional BBQ in a relaxed and friendly presentation, we're the ones," he said. "If they want a fancy presentation, they probably don't want us."

Bergin added that outsiders have been hired to help make Black Bean "look good," but it hasn't taken. There's no need, not with Black Bean's renowned beef brisket.

"Not everyone knows how to cook it and people love it," Bergin said. "I'm thrilled when people tell me they've never had brisket so good, especially if they are from Texas."

Beyond brisket, the Black Bean menu is filled with countless other savory items which have been a hit at events in the North Bay for nearly 20 years.

"We use a dry rub and slow smoke our meats in our pit for many, many hours which produces juicy, fall off the bone pork ribs, melt in your mouth brisket, succulent, tender chicken and our pork butt is to die for," Bergin said. "We can create a special menu for your occasion and offer vegetarian options as well."
