Mindful Movements Pilates Studio Helps You Destress

With nearly two decades of combined experience in personal training and Pilates instruction, Nicky Handlin knows how to help people improve their body. Now at her own Pilates studio, Mindful Movements Pilates, in Brentwood, Handlin has a place of her own to help the people of the Bay Area. What ​was the inspiration behind opening Mindful Movements Pilates Studio? How long have you been open?

I started teaching exercise as a personal trainer first in 2001 and then begin learning Pilates a couple of years later. After working with hundreds of people in the corporate fitness environment, and realizing they all would benefit most from Pilates for various reasons, I decided to focus solely on teaching Pilates.

I opened my first studio in Livermore in May 2010, and my second location in Brentwood in February 2016. I've recently closed my Livermore location and am now focused solely on Brentwood.

How would you describe the culture and atmosphere the studio and classes offer to students?

We are a boutique studio that is very warm and welcoming to all, with a very positive and supportive environment.

Along with your pilates reformer classes you offer barre classes. Can you tell me a little more about these?

Our barre classes offer mat Pilates work plus standing ballet inspired exercises with freestanding bars as well as light dumbbell arm work. [It's a] great core, arm and leg workout [and] fun to offer the variety.

Why do you think someone should choose Mindful Movements Pilates Studio for their pilates instruction?

We aspire to change the way people think of exercise from a dreaded piece of their day, to looking forward to it as the best, most enjoyable part of their day because our workouts are enjoyable, and you leave feeling renewed, balanced, and energized.

Our workouts are a full-body, core-based strength training workout that is geared towards alignment and balancing out our muscles, which helps to reduce pain and injuries while strengthening the body from the inside out.

I warn people that they will become addicted, because their level of expectation of how their body should feel is raised.
