Bringing Traditionalism Back: Linden Street Brewery

By Elisha Neubauer

When Linden Street Brewery opened its doors in 2009, it was the first production brewery in Oakland in over fifty years. Following in the footsteps of the Golden West Brewery- which ceased operations in 1959- founder Adam Lamoreau decided to concentrate on local styles that were brewed all across the Bay area over 100 years ago. The intention of Linden Street Brewery is simple: to provide brewery-fresh beer to its hometown and neighboring communities.

"One thing that makes us stand out is our focus on traditional style beers," says Andrew Ritter, Head of Brewery Operations. "Our main focus was to make traditional style lagers, but now also make traditional English style ales." When they started, they knew they wanted to remain a small operation, in order to focus more on quality. Beers are made in small batches with whole grain malts, locally grown hops, and their own proprietary yeast strains.

If you find yourself standing in front of their quaint serving counter trying to decide on which brew to try first- perhaps try the community favorites. Most customers seem to favor the Hop Candi, which contains subtle hints of citrus and rye. Another fan favorite is the Ol' Brick ESB. "It has a really nice malty side to the beer and easy-to-drink carbonation. It's also 4.5% ABV, a session, easy-drinking beer," Ritter explains.

So is the care and attention Linden puts into each batch getting noticed by consumers? The 4.5 out of 5 star rating on online review sites seems to say, yes. "This place is the prototypical hidden gem," raves one reviewer. "It's just FANTASTIC beer made by good people. They're friendly and accommodating. Sure the brewery is in the middle of nowhere...but that doesn't make it NOT worth the trip," exclaims another. Open on weekends, Linden Street Brewery provides a private lot for ample parking and is dog friendly- making it the ultimate in weekend hang-out spots.

Linden Street Brewery is the perfect, relaxed environment to enjoy great beer with great company. Visit this hidden gem yourself!
