Know What Your HVAC System Needs: An Interview with Nicholas Boling of JH Simpson Company, Inc.

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are a local business that was founded in 1944 and we continue to be one of the largest HVAC Companies in the Central Valley. We are a complete one stop shop for the majority of your Residential and Commercial needs. Our services included Heating and Air Conditioning, Sheet Metal Fabrication, Plumbing, Solar, Electrical, Roofing, Windows / Doors, Etc.

What are the most common signs that your HVAC system needs to be repaired?

There are a number of signs that one should look for regarding their HVAC system having an issue which include: The unit not turning on, the unit not following proper operation (e.g. cooling on a/c and heating on furnace), the unit producing a loud or suspicious noise, a burning smell / gas smell producing from the unit.

When would you suggest that homeowners consider replacing it instead of repairing?

If the unit is older than 5 years and the repair cost is approximately 50% of the price of the replacement system, we would highly suggest that the customer consider a replacement. This will typically save the customer time, money, and frustration in the long run as a system typically continues to have problems and issues the older it gets and the more the unit is used in it's current condition.

What is a reasonable time frame (or age) you would usually recommend replacing heating and/or cooling equipment?

In our line of work, we typically see a system that used per the normal average needing to be replaced or beginning to have issues between the 10 year and 15 year mark. Some systems last longer due to a strong preventive maintenance program. Although the program cannot guarantee the extended life of the system, it can ensure that the system maintains manufacture specification with the recommended cleaning and servicing of the equipment.

What are the basic advantages of getting a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning, or HVAC, system?

The systems that we currently install have a much higher energy efficiency rating than ones that were installed when the home or building was first constructed. With higher energy efficiency, the customer will see a decrease in the cost of utilizing the system. A new system will also reduce potential service calls that one might see with an older system. A new system will also allow the customer to utilize the advanced technology that their systems are set up for. This would include wireless control over the systems, zone control systems, wireless thermostats, etc.

What advice do you give your clients who want to take care of their HVAC systems at home?

We recommend that each client sign a Preventive Maintenance Contract with a reputable HVAC Contractor such as J.H. Simpson Company, Inc. We offer both Residential and Commercial Preventive Maintenance Contracts at a great discount for our customer's. This will ensure that the filters are changed at the appropriate times, the units are cleaned to ensure peak performance, and any issues found can be resolved prior to them becoming much worse.
