Joyful Stays at the Waterfront in Oakland

By Courtney Clark

With big blue stripes and a flag perched on its roof, the Joie de Vivre Waterfront Hotel in Oakland looks positively nautical. It's a great base from which to explore Jack London Square- or to take the ferry to San Francisco!

Built in the 1970s, the Waterfront has 145 rooms, complete with special touches like iPod docking stations, flat-screen plasma televisions, and fireplaces. The hotel offers a complimentary wine and cheese hour, and a heated pool, and waterfront guests can enjoy a magnificent view of the San Francisco Bay and marina. The Waterfront is pet-friendly, too- offering beds, water bowls, and treats for your furry friend.

Luck Sanabria, Director of Sales and Catering, tells us, "The hotel brings class, fun and a vacation-feel to the Square. From the moment a guest arrives at Waterfront Hotel, they're greeted by our attentive staff."

The Waterfront Hotel is set in Jack London Square, Oakland's historic seaport. Jack London, the Square's namesake, is famous for writing books such as The Call of the Wild and White Fang.

Guests of the Waterfront Hotel can enjoy a wide array of activities at the Square- from a tour of the USS Potomac to wine tasting at one of several local tasting rooms. Those looking for something more active will enjoy bike riding along the boardwalk, kayaking in estuary, and even stand-up paddleboarding. From there, guests can explore everything else that Oakland has to offer- or venture beyond the city limits. The Alameda/Oakland ferry offers environmentally-friendly transportation to and from San Francisco and Angel Island.

The Waterfront's mission goes hand-in-hand with Jack London's life philosophy. The author once wrote, "The function of man is to live, not to exist;" and Sanabria says that the hotel strives "to create transformative experiences for our guests that inspire the human spirit." Whether guests want to enjoy delicious food, learn about the Square's past, or pursue a more outdoorsy adventure, the Waterfront provides a great base for exploring Oakland.
