In Motion Dance Center is Beloved in the Bay Area

By Pamela Sosnowski

Dance instructor Deena Roming believes that every community should have access to dance lessons, which is what inspired her to choose Martinez as the home for her dance school, In Motion Dance Center.

"I knew this thriving, small-yet growing community with LOTS of young families would be a great place to bring dance," she said. "In Motion opened its doors in September 2005. This is our 12th year and we are loving every step!"

Today the award-winning studio teaches over 85 dance classes per week, and families have continued to return to In Motion year after year because of the staff's professionalism and welcoming atmosphere. One of the studio's differentiating factors is its smaller class sizes, where lessons are capped from 8-15 students each depending on their age and ability. These provide more personalized attention for each student. Classes are available for aspiring dancers of all ages, from two years old through adult.

The studio offers a variety of dance genres to suit everyone's tastes. Ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop are among the classic offerings while more specialized programs such as tumbling incorporate acrobatic moves such as handstands, cartwheels, and back handsprings. The musical theater class was custom made for thespians that need to learn basic stage techniques. The studio is also home to several competitive teams that perform in local and national dance competitions and have performed for Carnival Cruise Lines and Disneyland.

In Motion's 5,500-square-foot building is considered a state-of-the-art dance school, with four separate studio rooms designed for specific forms of dance. Some of the studios feature central heat and air conditioning, full-length mirrors, floating floors, and a 60-inch television for airing video feedback on lessons. Several comfortable viewing areas also double as homework rooms, so that students can catch up on school work while waiting to attend a dance class.

Some of Roming's instructors come from illustrious dance careers, and some have even worked for Disney, the NFL, and the NBA. Roming herself holds a master's degree in dance, and takes pride in hiring teachers that share her passion for watching students grow and thrive. In Motion's staff comes from all over the U.S., and all instructors are highly trained and hold bachelor's degrees and dance certifications.

The Martinez community has embraced In Motion since it first opened, and the studio supports several local charities. Over $10,000 was donated last year to local schools, youth groups and nonprofits among other groups.

"It's important that we are truly a part of our community for many reasons but the most important reason is to show our students and lead by example," Roming said. "If their role models give back to the community I know that the next generation will continue to do so."

Roming, who grew up on jazz dancing, loves teaching ballet, contemporary, and tumbling to all ages but admits that her favorite students are usually the littlest generation of aspiring dancers.

"There is something really special about teaching the combo classes to the two to five year-olds," Roming said. "They are experiencing dance for the first time and to see their eyes light up when dance becomes their passion too is pretty special!"
