Home Buying Countdown:The Moving Process

This one thought plagues many first-time homebuyers, adding more stress to what is already a complicated process. There are many factors to consider before investing in what may be your largest asset, but having a list of tasks and checkpoints can help avoid complications and potential delays, ensuring you get the best deal for the property you are considering.

6 Months Before:

With a substantial amount of time left, it's important to know your financial situation before beginning your search. Also think about the type of house you are looking for, such as a condo, townhouse, etc. Finally, interview Real Estate Agents who will be able to help you with your search and who will most likely remain with you throughout the rest of your home buying process.

4 Months Before:

At this time, choose a mortgage broker who will run your credit and analyze your financial situation. It's also important to get pre-approved for a mortgage, make an application and compile the necessary documents to increase the efficiency of this process and decrease the likelihood of paperwork delays. Before you finalize a price, make sure to get a thorough home inspection. Furthermore, it's important to secure homeowners insurance and other similar services for your new property.

1 Month Before:

With a month to go, choose a mover and clarify a closing and move-in date. Contact insurance companies to make sure that your belongings are covered in the move. Take an inventory of your household goods to facilitate the process.

1 Week Before:

With a week left, confirm your moving time, send a change of address and contact information to friends, family and co-workers. Cancel your newspaper and other subscriptions, or forward them along to your new address. Also, notify the DMV of your change of address and get a new license if needed.

1 Day Before:

Make sure utilities are connected at your new home and get an up-to-date set of keys so that you will be able to get in to your new place once you get there.

Welcome to your new home!
