Focus Photography Tells Stories Without Words

By S. Mathur

Muhi Khwaja is a photographer who likes to listen. Talking to his clients helps him to figure out what's important to them, to tell the stories of their lives.

"If you're looking to remember a point in time with fond memories, it starts with learning more about what makes those moments so precious," he said. "I like to listen to my customers and learn more about them so that the images I capture truly reflect what they're looking for, and who they are."

Khwaja and his wife Natalie founded Focus Photography five years ago in Michigan, before heading out to California. The studio is now based in the San Francisco Bay Area, and still handles assignments in the metro Detroit area as well. Focus Photography offers a full range of services, including event photography such as corporate and nonprofit events and portrait sessions. Portraits can be wedding or family pictures, couples, maternity and new born, and also professional headshots.

Khwaja describes the studio's style as photojournalistic lifestyle photography. Family portraits are his favorite.

"My favorite type of photography is family portraits," he said. "I love capturing the interactions between siblings and parents. It allows a family to pause their busy lives, and appreciate times when they can create experiences together, which they will to have and hold for years to come."

Clients include individuals, institutions like the University of Michigan Dearborn, and businesses. They all appreciate the skill and professionalism that Khwaja and his team bring to their work, as well as the resulting pictures. In addition to technical skill, the Focus Photography portfolio shows an artistic sensibility for composition and for connecting to the subjects. The pictures succeed in capturing emotions and movement, telling a story without words.

"I've always had a camera on me, wherever I go, for as long as I can remember," he said. "Once I took photos of my own parents, nieces, and nephews, I realized how much I loved it. Haven't turned back since."

Khwaja's background and his connection to such diverse locales as metro Detroit, India and California have added a feel for different cultures to his aesthetic sensibilities. This understanding shines through in the wedding pictures, which include diverse cultural traditions, as well as event photography. The portfolio covers everything from graduation parties to St. Patrick's Day parades to formal Muslim Bar Association dinners, all pictured with empathy and clarity.

Focus Photography also offers photo editing and printing services. Client pictures are usually available a month or so after a shoot, via an online portfolio. As a special touch, Khwaja will create a photo book with selected prints.
