Expert Tips on Landscape Design: An Interview with Michael Lyons of Lyonscape

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Lyoncape is a small landscape company that prides itself in customer service and the details. Lyonscape specializes in the installation and maintenance of sustainable landscapes, irrigation updates and renovations, as well as hardscape installation.

How should homeowners do first for a new landscape design project?

I ask homeowners to think about how they want to utilize their outdoor living space. I also believe that it is extremely helpful speaking to a licensed contractor and even a landscape architect.

What are some of the most popular design elements for homeowners in Northern California?

Drought-tolerant and native plants are very popular.

Can you briefly explain some of the options homeowners have when it comes to hardscapes?

The hardscape choice usually depends on the setting, style of home and how the materials fit into that setting. The three main hardscapes we install are stamped concrete, flagstone and concrete pavers.

How do irrigation and lighting factor into the landscape design?

Appropriate and adequate irrigation for the your landscape is key to the success of your plants. Automatic irrigation has proven to be a necessity. Outdoor lighting is an enhancement for any landscape, especially in California where we spend so much time outdoors.

What recommendations do you have for a great looking yard that will survive with relatively low maintenance?

I recommend using drought-tolerant and native plants equipped with automatic drip irrigation, an adequate hardscape area, a splash of artificial turf and 4" of bark/mulch.
