Changing the Way the World Looks at Water with DayOne Response

By Elisha Neubauer

Disasters happen, whether we are expecting them or not. While they can be chaotic and terrifying, there are companies out there who strive to pick up the pieces afterward and try to help those affected regain some sense of normalcy. DayOne Response is one of those companies who are there to help out when disaster strikes. DayOne Response is unique in that it focuses on ensuring everyone has clean water despite the chaos of the situation.

"DayOne Response Inc. develops innovative solutions for disaster relief including patented & award-winning DayOne Waterbag," states Tricia Compas-Markman, Founder and CEO of DayOne Response, Inc. "Providing complete household water purification, combining the four elements of municipal water purification (collection, treatment, transport and storage) in a 10L backpack."

The company got its start while Compas-Markman was completing her Graduate studies in Civil and Environmental Engineering at California Polytechnic State University. While attending CPSU, Compas-Markman worked alongside Dr. Tryg Lundquist and the pair designed what is now the DayOne Waterbag technology.

"Shortly after graduating, I founded DayOne Response in 2010 to go beyond an idea and create a solution and thriving business in water treatment technologies addressed for vulnerable populations," Compas-Markman told us. "The motivation of the work very much stemmed from the natural disasters that were all over the media at the time where portable, compact, and easily deployable household water treatment tools were desperately needed." Of course, she's referring to the Southeast Asian Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina that rocked the world in 2004-2005.

So how exactly does the DayOne Waterbag work?

According to Compas-Markman, it is essentially a backpack that incorporates the four key elements of municipal water purification: collection, treatment, transport and storage into a personal-sized system. "You can basically turn a puddle full of muddy, very contaminated water into 10-liters of clean drinking water in 30 minutes," she details. "Through disinfection and filtration the DayOne Waterbag is robust in removing turbidity, cysts, viruses, bacteria, and arsenic from contaminated water sources such as creeks, rivers, and ponds."

Since its inception, DayOne has been utilized in over fourteen countries by several major humanitarian organizations. "The Waterbag has been used for immediate disaster relief, cholera preparedness and seasonal rain events in West Africa, typhoon response in Southeast Asia, and for health clinics helping HIV-affected individuals in Uganda," Compas-Markman proudly states. The best part, though, is that the pictographics included with the product make it so that untrained individuals can produce their own clean water.

The DayOne Waterbag is a phenomenal product that is really changing the disaster relief process and helping countries who have little to no access to clean water. But, it's also so much more than that. "Additionally, the DayOne Waterbag can meet your family's preparedness needs- including emergencies, and remote outdoor settings where drinking water is not available," states Compas-Markman. "It is perfect for use in situations such as camping, hiking, backpacking, fishing, hunting, emergency situations, and natural disasters where the drinking water supply has been depleted or is of unknown quality."
