Children's Discovery Museum Soars In San Jose

By Paul Rowe

In 1982, two Santa Clara County moms, Reba Wehrly and Carolyn Nelson, thought the South Bay should join the enlightened ranks of a few cities in the country that feature children's museums.

After a commissioned public opinion poll demonstrated widespread support, the two contacted the Los Angeles and Denver Children's Museums for guidance. Buoyed by enthusiastic public support and a dream, they were off and running. Soon after, a board of directors was formed and planning and fundraising began in earnest.

For years now, Children's Discovery Museum has consistently flourished in San Jose, providing families with fun exhibits and thrill of received knowledge. Young and old alike, residents of California flock to the museum's doors seeking an enthralling day trip unlike any other.

"Visitors are impressed with how much fun their children have exploring, testing, tinkering and creating with the interactive exhibits in science, humanities, performing arts, and health," Public Relations Manager Cecilia Clark said. "Parents love the opportunities the museum provides for family learning whether it's seeing who can create the biggest bubble in Bubbles, sparking scientific inquiry in Mammoth Discovery!, contemplating the engineering and physical advantage of circles to solve problems, such as pulling heavy loads or providing architectural support in Secrets of Circles, or getting a little wet together while sending a ball soaring atop a jet of water or unleashing a misty cloud of fog in WaterWays."

With such a diverse range of themed exhibits, it is easy to see why so many adults and kids cherish their time here. The Museum is the perfect place for preschool, elementary classes, homeschoolers, and community organizations seeking a shared educational experience with self-directed adventurers.

"Our mission of inspiring creativity, curiosity, and lifelong learning make us the ideal location for educators and field trips," Clark elaborated. "We view our relationship with educators and the education community as a partnership in support of all the children in our community."

It's an inspiration for educators and parents in California that the massive achievement of the Children's Discovery Museum all began with a chance conversation between two moms. Their unique vision, one that only tenacious mothers could conceive, combined with the dedicated support of their community, has transformed the lives of countless children in California.
