Appreciating the Beauty of Stained Concrete: An Interview with Mark Richardson of Richardson's Concrete Effects

By Mark Richardson

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Richardson's Concrete Effects has been in business since 1993, we are family owned and operated. Our specialty is decorative concrete overlayments for both interior and exterior applications. We also stain and seal all concrete surfaces and do pour in place concrete countertops.

What are the most common reasons homeowners choose to get new flooring?

Most common reasons for exterior concrete overlayments is aesthetics, most folks want their homes to look good. Most common reasons for interior overlayments are durability and ease of upkeep. People with pets seem to love interior concrete floors.

What is concrete staining and how long does it take for this process to be done?

Concrete staining is just that, staining of the concrete, they can be opaque or translucent, our specialty is multicolor translucent staining. Once concrete is stained a protective clear sealer is applied. The process usually takes a few days.

What are the benefits people will get from concrete staining over traditional flooring?

I believe in this question your focus is interior stained concrete, besides the fact they are very durable and ease to maintain, you can get a one of a kind look!

How are concrete stained floors properly maintained?

This will depend on the sealer you use. We use a modified urethane which is extremely durable, so maintenance is just a matter of mopping with warm water and a mild detergent as needed. You can also mop on a top coat, every six month to a year for added protection.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to install concrete stained floors but with a limited budget?

Most people on a tight budget look to stained concrete for an affordable flooring alternative. The one thing they need to realize is interior concrete usually needs some prep work to get it ready for stain. This prep work includes removal of current flooring, crack repair, patching, floats and cleaning the surface, this adds cost to the end product but is needed for a surface that will be long lasting. Price out your options and remember to keep in mind how long the finished product will last and how it will wear.
