AnT Swim School Brings Easy-to-Follow Swim Lessons to the Entire Family

By Kelly Church

AnT Swim School is a San Jose, CA swimming facility that is open year round and offers lessons in heated pools for all people, aged four months and up, adults included. The owners, Terence O'Malley and Ana Eppel, realized the need for a professional swimming instruction facility in the area and opened AnT Swim School after a combined 30 years managing swim schools in the state. Both are lifeguards, certified pool operators and swim instructors.

"The owners of AnT Swim School were well aware of the nationwide statistics on drowning," O'Malley says. "We believe that many of those drownings could be avoided if more people received proper swim instruction, particularly at a very young age. We want to do our part to resolve this issue. We welcomed the opportunity to provide a complete range of swim instruction and programs to San Jose."

O'Malley says AnT Swim School has now become the number one aquatic program provider in San Jose, recently winning "Best Swim School in San Jose" from the Best Businesses of San Jose. The swimming school teaches a lot of children's swimming classes. Starting as babies, four-month old children and up can take lessons that introduce them to the water, building swimming skills that they'll have the rest of their lives. During Baby Ant Saturdays, for kids four months old to three years old, parents get in the water with their children. There are also adult classes and O'Malley says that many parents start taking lessons themselves after seeing their kids become so good in the water.

"We have a layered approach to teaching swimming," O'Malley says. "We stress that swimming is a life skill. The initial levels are designed for young children to learn the basics of water survival: breath control, treading water and fast kicking. The students master one skill at a time. After the students learn basic skills, they then begin to learn the competitive swimming strokes."

O'Malley says the most valuable thing AnT Swim School offers is a complete focus on the child during class. With many distractions in the world outside of the pool, O'Malley says it's an advantage to have parents focused just on their kids during class.

AnT Swim School also offers public swimming hours, Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Public swim hours are also on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. It costs $4 for adults, and $3 for children and seniors 55 or older.
